 I am Legend

Went to go see it tonight...

Overall it wasn't bad. The pacing was slow at times, but Will Smith's strange craziness and fairly shocking moments make it worth the 10 bucks I shelled out for it.

It wasn't vampires, but mutants who craved blood. The hibernated during day and ran crazy at night. It all started with the Cure for cancer which mutates into an Airborne contagion. Smith the only survivor in New York struggles to get by on his own.

The slow pace wasn't as bad to me as Casino Royale, but it does affect my view of the movie. Its real strength was the cutting and visual presentation of the film. From wide apocalyptic shots to quick intense (even nerving) scene changes. The film also relies heavily on CGI for creature and animal effects. I wish it wasn't so obvious, but it wasn't so bad you couldn't believe it.

The pace quickens as the final half-hour closes in, which makes you wish it was longer because the movie just started getting good.

Anyway a 7 out of 10 for me....I'd see it again.

Really, really, really disappointed. Though I knew since I learned that they changed Vampires to vampire zombies, I knew it was already doomed.

First off, I'm going to look at this as someone who knew it wasn't going to be like the book, and thus temporarily lowering my standards on good.

Sure the effects were pretty, but I don't buy comic books for the art, though it is a fact it is all about the story. I will admit some of the effects were cool and the deserted New York was pretty.

I loved how the majority of the dialog was Will Smith talking to his dog, which was both amusing and tragic and I loved how it showed his heavy descend from sanity, as proven through the scenes with the mannequin.

A side from a lot of very obvious plot holes such as when the Vampire Zombie dogs were waiting for the sun to go down to kill Neville, when the leader was there and had proven to be able to survive the sunlight for a limited amount of time and could have easily killed Neville himself.

My biggest complaint, was the title. I am Legend was not an adaptation of the Matheson's book nor did it have anything to do with Neville becoming a legend. Now I know Jack will probably like to disagree with this as they call him a legend in the movie when Anna says something like, "He saved us. That was his legend."

The word she was looking for was Legacy. Not Legend. A legend is a story that may or may not have been extrapolated from a real event. The legend in the actual book involved Neville looking back over the past before he was executed and he was about to take some suicide pills, he realized that now vampires, which the world believed were just a legend, were now the dominant species and the dominant society too. And now the last surviving human who slaughtered their kind and was immune to thing they weren't, was now taking their place as the true legend. That explanation cannot do the ending of the book justice. But, the explanation itself was a whole lot better than the crappy Hollywood ending of the world living happily-ever-after.

But they said something about Legen---Just Kidding. I know. I know its not I Am Legend the book. But this is just a movie kinda somewhat steeling the title of the book. It should be called I am thief!

Anyway, It wasn't horrible but it was no 300.

I mostly blame the director for a lot of the problems. I mean I've personally had a vendetta against Francis Lawrence, ever since Constantine, where he turned a British, blond, con-man who looks remarkably like Sting, into a gun-toting Keanu Reeves. Not to mention they had Shia LaBeouf play what was suppose to be a 40 year old. Then to top things off they changed London to L.A. and the pronunciation of Constantine, and made the whole magic thing to very straight forward just Christianity.

Anyway. The point of rambling is to point out that Francis Lawrence (the director of I Am Legend and Constantine) is very bad at creating adaptations.
